Pro-Life-ism: A New Religion? – January 23rd, 2014 1:11 am

Is it me, or is “Pro-Life” becoming a new religious denomination? I know this may put some people off, and that is honestly not my aim, but it is a legitimate concern for me. It first hit me when last year, fellow Catholics were calling the new pope “pro-life”.

It seems to me that folk believe the fight* to end the killing of innocent life in the womb is the trumpet-blast to unify a lost world. It’s not. Christ is the focal point in this vale of tears. We should not be rallying around a grievous sin of mankind, as much as we should be roused to march lock-step in the victory of the Cross. I understand that the abortion debate can be swayed even without the implementation of a theological argument. But my uneasiness is more focussed on those who identify as Christian.

And yet, maybe we need to realize that the culture simply doesn’t respond to Christological truth. I just fear that even amongst fellow believers, we may forget about the Commission. A Commission that namely has nothing to do with ending abortion, but everything to do with love of God… which, in turn, will most certainly spell the end to such egregious behaviour against God… and that behaviour includes the killing of innocent life in utero.

Better than being “Pro-Life”, I am Catholic.

(*I can think of better ways to “fight” than marching one day a year. And this is not to disparage various “marches”. Not at all. I just know that if we all had the heroic virtue of a Mary Wagner, things would be different. Very different. If we all had the righteous anger to really hit the government where it hurts, things would be different. Saints would be made.)
